Dr. Richard Prokopchak

Dr. Richard Prokopchak

General and Interventional Cardiology

Dr. Richard Prokopchak is a board-certified cardiologist with over three decades of experience in general and interventional cardiology. He founded Southwest Virginia Cardiology in Salem, Virginia in 2010, where he specializes in procedures such as angioplasty, stent placement, rotablation, intravascular ultrasound, stress testing, and echocardiography. His dedication to patient care and innovative cardiac interventions has established him as a leader in the field.

His extensive training underscores his expertise. Dr. Prokopchak completed a Master of Science from Georgetown University along with his Doctor of Medicine. His postgraduate training includes an internship at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, internal medicine residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center—where he served as Chief Medical Resident—a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Georgetown University Hospital along with an Advanced Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Medicine and Coronary Interventions at Stanford University.

A veteran of the United States Navy, where he served as a General Medicine Officer and Staff Physician from 1985 to 1988, Dr. Prokopchak holds active licensure from the Virginia Board of Medicine and certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease. He is an active member of the American College of Cardiology, American Society of Echocardiography, and Society for Vascular Ultrasound.

Dr. Prokopchak and his wife are proud parents of four sons and make their home in the scenic mountains of southwest Virginia. A dedicated sports fan, he loves catching the latest games alongside his boys. Beyond that, he relishes hiking, playing tennis, and channeling his Slovakian heritage through his impressive culinary talents!

Physician Assistant – Cardiology

Lindsey E. Murrill, PA-C, is a dedicated Physician Assistant with over a decade of experience in cardiology. She earned her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, VA, in 2014, following a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2011.

Certified by the NCCPA since 2014, Lindsey holds active DEA and NPI credentials, along with certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS). She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants, and American College of Cardiology.

Since January 2015, Lindsey has served as a Physician Assistant at Southwest Virginia Cardiology, where she manages both inpatient and outpatient care. Her responsibilities include conducting histories and physicals, consultations, daily rounds, EKG and telemetry interpretation, stress testing supervision, and discharge planning.

In the outpatient setting, she handles new patient evaluations, urgent visits, follow-ups, diagnostic test interpretations, and treatment planning for conditions such as coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, structural heart disease, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension.

Committed to community service, Lindsey co-coordinated and participated in the Wellness Advocate Program at Bradley Free Clinic in Roanoke, helping patients achieve healthier lifestyles through motivational interviewing. She also volunteered on a global medical aid trip to Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Outside of work, Lindsey enjoys spending quality time with her husband Jon and two adorable sons. The family loves traveling, going to sporting events, and everything outdoors.
